In a world where communication is often taken for granted, Variety gives local kids and teens the tools to fully express themselves.

Seven-year-old Clarkson faces verbal communication barriers, but with speech therapy and the aid of a communication device, he now shares thoughts and feelings proudly.

Clarkson’s whole world changed when his speech therapist recommended trialing NovaChat, a speech-generating device. Previously, he communicated using a PECS board, an antiquated tool requiring the child to manually move individual words and phrases on a Velcro board.

Communication with family and friends often led to frustration and misunderstandings. Simple tasks became daunting challenges, and Clarkson struggled to convey his thoughts and desires effectively.

“When we couldn’t understand something he wanted, it was so frustrating. Many times, he would have to take us by the hand and drag us to what he needed,” shares his dad, David.

“Clarkson is such a smart kid, but he wasn’t being understood.”

Clarkson’s family knew something had to change. When his case manager connected them with Variety, Clarkson soon obtained a communication device that would serve as his voice.

The NovaChat device unlocked what had been inside Clarkson all along, and his frustrations faded away.  Now equipped with a tool to convey his thoughts, needs, wants, and opinions, Variety has empowered Clarkson with a newfound sense of confidence and independence.

One of the key aspects of Clarkson’s progress is the sheer versatility of his communication device. Whether he’s at home, at school, or out in the community, Clarkson takes his device everywhere he goes. From outings to his favorite places, like Rock the Spectrum Gym and Chuck E. Cheese, Clarkson now has the power to directly ask to go places. With his favorite spots and topics programmed into his device, Clarkson can quickly and easily communicate his preferences and engage in activities he enjoys.

Clarkson’s family attributes his boost in confidence to his improved communication skills which have increased interest in social interactions, fostering connections with his peers, and enriching his overall experiences.

“At school, he has been practicing all kinds of things like him saying ‘it’s my turn’ or ‘it’s their turn,’ explains David.

“We have programmed the buttons so now he can introduce himself and say ‘Hi, my name is Clarkson.’

As Clarkson’s familiarity with the device grew, so did his ability to express himself. From simple requests to complex sentences, Clarkson’s proficiency with the device blossomed. Clarkson’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of accessibility and inclusivity. By embracing assistive technology and providing support to those in need, we empower individuals like Clarkson to reach their full potential and participate fully in the world around them.
