The 2nd annual Variety Unbound event on April 20, 2023 was truly an evening of empowerment! Powerful performances thrilled the audience and demonstrated live on stage the impact of Variety’s programs.
Emcee Mandy Murphey from FOX 2 welcomed guests to The Factory in Chesterfield, a magnificent space and the perfect venue to feature the talents of Variety Kids. She introduced special guest Mandy Harvey, singer, songwriter, author, and speaker who happens to be deaf. Mandy was Simon Cowell‘s “Golden Buzzer” pick on America’s Got Talent.
Mandy Harvey shared her incredible journey of studying music and songwriting in college before being diagnosed with a rare connective tissue disorder that would leave her profoundly deaf. After walking away from music for a time, Mandy returned with a commitment to finding solutions that would allow her to pursue her passion despite her loss of hearing. Her message of perseverance resonated with the captive audience of Variety Kids, families, and supporters.
Variety’s Performing Arts ensemble presented musical numbers like “Do-Re-Mi” and “Under the Sea” that entertained the crowd and showcased their incredible confidence. Guests also got special backstage access with FOX 2 Reporter Patrick Clark interviewing Variety Kids while they prepared to go on stage. Watching Variety Kids shine in the spotlight produced countless smiles, cheers, and even some happy tears.
Concluding the evening was a special rendition of “It’s Only a Paper Moon” with special guest Mandy Harvey who joined the kids in song while also communicating with sign language.
We are so grateful to the supporters, volunteers, staff, and performers who made Variety Unbound such a success. For those of you that weren’t able to participate, it’s not too late! By making a gift to Variety, you will empower local children and teens through life-changing and innovative programming.
