Transforming Uncertainty into Independence

For 90 years, Variety St. Louis has impacted thousands of local children with special needs, empowering them with the tools to unlock their full potential. With access to vital medical equipment, therapies, and socialization opportunities, Variety Kids’ possibilities are reimagined.

After spending her childhood with the Variety family, 21-year-old Veronica is ready to transition into adulthood and flourish in the next chapter of her life.

Diagnosed before she was born with congenital hydrocephalus, Veronica’s future was unpredictable. This condition causes fluid buildup in the brain, leading to a wide range of potential developmental, physical, or intellectual challenges.

The unknown was daunting for her parents, Diane and Don, as they anxiously awaited the arrival of their baby daughter. At just three days old, Veronica underwent neurosurgery — the first of 13 brain surgeries and 20 other procedures in following years.

With additional diagnoses including cerebral palsy and epilepsy, Veronica required extensive care. As Diane transitioned from the workplace to full-time caregiver, the parents of five simply could not afford all the necessary specialized equipment on a single income.

When Variety came into the picture before Veronica was a year old, the family’s life changed, and financial pressures eased. From various pieces of durable medical equipment and orthotics to power wheelchairs and van modifications, Variety empowered Veronica and her family to move forward confidently as they adapted to their new normal.

“It’s unimaginable to think about life without Variety. Veronica’s quality of life wouldn’t be where it is today without them. The peace of mind that comes from knowing Variety has our back is invaluable,” shares Diane.

Although Veronica’s journey has been filled with challenges, her family has always prioritized helping her live her best life. Today, Veronica remains a joyful, empathetic and loving individual, always eager to uplift others with her infectious smile and warm personality.

Diane proudly notes, “I love when people see what someone like Veronica brings to the world. She brings out the best in people and has a beautiful way of expressing herself.”

As Veronica transitions into adulthood, she needed one last piece of equipment to propel her towards independence. The LUCI System, a cutting-edge safety feature added to her power wheelchair, uses sensors to prevent tips, collisions, and falls before they happen—particularly beneficial for Veronica, whose slower response time makes reacting to obstacles challenging.

“Veronica without the LUCI system was a dangerous driver. She would brush up against walls and get way too close to curbs and car doors for comfort,” shares Don.

With morning strolls dedicated to using the LUCI, Veronica will be out mingling in the community in no time! As she continues to practice, she’s growing more confident in her abilities and embracing greater independence.

Veronica is a powerful example of the enduring impact of Variety programs. Her journey illustrates how the right support can transform a child’s life. You can make a difference for children like Veronica by giving to Variety today, empowering them to thrive in their childhood and beyond.

“Variety created an environment where she’s accepted, appreciated, lifted up, and encouraged,” shares Diane. “We are so grateful that Variety and their donors recognize Veronica as a valuable member of society and find her worthy of investing in her personal potential and quality of life.”
