Variety’s Impact Close to Home

For families raising a child with a disability, access to the right resources can make all the difference; opening doors to greater independence, confidence, and connection.

Across the Greater St. Louis region, Variety St. Louis provides adaptive equipment, therapy services, inclusive recreation opportunities, and other critical support for children and teens with disabilities in 30 counties throughout Missouri and Illinois. Through its “Impact Close to Home” initiative, Variety is highlighting not only the breadth of that reach, but the lives changed within local communities every day.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to participate fully in their community, regardless of ability or circumstance,” said Brian Roy, CEO of Variety St. Louis. “What’s powerful is seeing that impact unfold not just in St. Louis City or County, but in communities all across the region.”

An interactive map on Variety’s website allows visitors to explore the organization’s impact county by county, showcasing the number of children served over the last five years alongside the stories of local Variety Kids and families.

In St. Louis County alone, Variety has served 850 children during this period. Among them is 4-year-old Zuri, who received an augmentative communication device to help her navigate life with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

“With her diagnosis, it can be overwhelming and concerning what the future brings,” her family shared. “But having this device makes the future a bit brighter. She is now able to communicate her needs to us much better.”

In Madison County, Variety has served 99 children over the past five years. One of them is 21-year-old Sophie, who participated in Variety Adventure Camp for 13 summers.

“Thank you for giving Sophie a place to call hers,” her family shared. “I believe every kid deserves to go to summer camp, and Variety made it happen despite her high needs. She felt included and welcomed. She was known. Being part of a community where you are seen is a big deal in this crazy world we live in.”

And of the 167 children served in Jefferson County, 6-year-old Dalton has received orthotics, physical and occupational therapy support, and attends camp through Variety. These services have helped him build strength, develop new skills, and gain greater independence.

“Physical therapy has given Dalton the opportunity to work on strengthening his muscles and increasing his endurance,” his family shared. “It has helped him improve his gait, learn to transition from sitting to standing, and more. We are thankful for the support Variety has given us, allowing Dalton to attend weekly physical therapy sessions.”

“These stories represent so much more than equipment or services,” Roy said. “They represent children being included, families feeling supported, and possibilities that once felt out of reach becoming reality.”

Behind every number is a child gaining confidence, building connections, and experiencing opportunities that every child deserves. The impact is happening in communities across Missouri and Illinois and there is still more work to do.
