Accessible Places in St. Louis
While no summer activity is as good as Adventure Camp, there are so many great places in our St. Louis community that you can go with your family that will give the same sense of adventure and excitement. Here are some of our favorite accessible summer activities that are located right here in St. Louis!
The first place we would suggest is the St. Louis Aquarium. The Aquarium a wonderful way to learn about our underwater world and they have devoted a lot of time an energy to make the experience accessible for all. They have walkways, ramps and elevators, accessible restrooms, as well as personal guides and interpreters for those who may need them. Service dogs are always welcome in the aquarium and they also provide resources for individuals who have sensory processing challenges. This includes a special “calming corner” that Adventure Camp kids explored a few weeks ago. This room has lots of different activities and supports for those who may need a few quite moments.
The St. Louis Science Center is next up on our recommendations list. The Science center is also fully prepared to accommodate any individuals who may benefit from the use of strollers, scooters, walkers or wheelchairs. The popular theatres inside the Science center offer accessible seating, adjustable captioning devices, and Descriptive Video Services so that everyone can enjoy learning about science in a safe and comfortable environment!
Jaycee Park and its Discovery Playground is also a great accessible option for those who want to spend some time in the outdoors. A paved trail connects the major points of the park and provides multiple access points. Discovery Playground is an accessible playground that was completed in 2001. They have ADA accessible swings, cochlear implant friendly slides, an accessible water play feature, and safe rubber tile surfaces!
Our final recommendation for this summer, is a St. Louis staple, the Zoo! The Zoo has accessible parking, rentable Mobility Assistive Devices, and allow services dogs to accompany their owners. They offer complimentary sensory backpacks that includes resources and materials that help individuals with sensory sensitivities. Audio Descriptive tours are also available upon request for those who need them. The St. Louis Zoo is a wonderful part of our community and we love that it is accessible to our Variety Community!
