Three weeks. 72 kids and teens. One sold-out show. This summer, Variety Theatre brought kids with and without disabilities together at COCA for an unforgettable production of The Addams Family Young@Part, and the impact reached far beyond the stage.
Through Variety’s inclusive Performing Arts program, participants spent three weeks learning songs, choreography, lines and cues while preparing to bring the delightfully spooky Addams family to life. Along the way, they also built friendships, discovered new skills and gained confidence in themselves and their abilities.
For Liam, this summer’s experience was about more than performing in a musical. Taking on a larger speaking role and participating in a dance routine gave him opportunities to step outside his comfort zone and see what he could accomplish.
“His experience with the responsibility of having a speaking part has made him believe in himself,” his mom shared. “Being on stage has made him want to try other things.”
That confidence has continued beyond the theatre, with Liam going on to try out for other school teams, something his family says he may not have done before discovering Theatre. Now he plays two sports and he has learned to really put himself out there.
For Cricket, who participated in the program for the third year, the three-week experience has become an important part of her growth. Her family describes Variety Theatre as a place where she develops social and life skills while finding a community that encourages her to keep growing.
“These experiences are not simply activities for her, they are stepping stones toward independence,” her parents shared. “The impact this program is having reaches far beyond these three weeks, and far beyond Cricket. It is helping an entire community believe in what is possible for her.”
Those stepping stones are part of what makes Variety Theatre so meaningful. Every rehearsal, new friendship, line learned and moment in the spotlight gives participants another opportunity to feel seen, valued and capable.
And this summer, the cast of The Addams Family Young@Part proved just how much can happen when kids are given the opportunity to take the stage.
