Owning a bike is a rite of passage for any child. Bikes give children the freedom and independence to explore the world, playing outside with friends and family and making memories that will last a lifetime. That’s why Variety hosts our annual Bikes for Kids event, when we provide bikes to local kids and teens with special needs.
Each November, we give away more than 200 bikes to St. Louis-area kids and teens with physical or developmental disabilities. We give away standard bikes in multiple sizes, both with and without training wheels, so each child is sure to find the perfect fit. We also provide therapeutic bikes – bikes designed specifically for the rider’s needs – to Variety Kids with demonstrated financial need. These therapeutic bikes include adapted features like special frames, seats, pedals and more.
Requests for standard bikes open up each year, typically in August. Applicants will be required to submit a brief form at that time, so keep checking back! Please contact Robin Diehl via email or phone at 314-720-7717 for more information.
If your child is unable to ride a standard bike and is in need of a therapeutic bike specifically adapted to his or her needs, please contact Misty Burton directly via email or phone at 314-720-7708. Because of high demand and the fact that applications for therapeutic bikes are accepted year-round, there is typically a wait list for these bikes. Misty will add any approved applicants to the wait list - therapeutic bike applications do require additional medical and financial documentation.
