Just when the holidays are winding down and kids and teens are getting restless at home, it’s time for Winter Adventure Camp! This fun-filled day camp designed specifically for kids with special needs provides the ultimate camp experience. And, new this year, Winter Camp was extended by one day for Winter Teen Camp so that our teens could join in on the fun.
Like our Summer Adventure Camp, Winter Camp is free to St. Louis-area children and teens with differing abilities. Not only does Camp get these kids out of the house, it also provides unique experiences and new friends in a fun, safe environment. For many of these kids, they wouldn’t be able to do some of our activities anywhere else, allowing them to try something new and really put that “I can” attitude to use.
This year, Winter Adventure Camp was filled with activities. Each group was able to go bowling, rock climbing and swimming. They also played games in the gym, made picture frames and bird feeders during craft time and sang songs, played instruments and danced during music time. One day, we even had therapy dogs visit! There were many firsts for campers throughout each day – some campers conquered their fear of the climbing wall while others were finally tall enough to speed down the big slide.
At Teen Camp, campers also made crafts, and many had a great time singing karaoke. Swimming was yet again a favorite time of the day, with the lazy river seeming to be perfect for many campers who could be found laying back and relaxing all throughout their time in the pool.
In all, Winter Adventure and Teen Camp went by in a blur, but it sure was fun! New friendships were made, counselor-camper bonds were built and fun activities were discovered. Thank you to the Center of Clayton for hosting us yet again, and thank you to all of our staff and volunteers who made it possible.
Registration for 2018 Summer Adventure Camp and Summer Teen Camp (yes – it’s back!) is not open yet, but we will share details soon. Stay tuned! Looking for more photos of Winter Adventure Camp or Winter Teen Camp? Check out our Flickr.
