Join Variety Theatre’s Internship Program in 2021

It takes a lot of people to put on our Variety Theatre production each year! It’s true – beyond the actors on stage, there are many people working behind the scenes to make each performance a success. By joining our Variety Theatre internship program in 2021, you could be a part of this fantastic crew for our production of The Music Man this October 15 – 17 and 22 - 24!

This inclusive internship program is open to young adults between the ages of 13 and 20. Variety Theatre Interns work side-by-side with some of the area’s top theatre professionals to learn specific technical theatre skills during a professional theatre production. Serving as an assistant in their department, interns get hands-on experience in the theatrical production process from start to finish. This may involve attending rehearsals, production and design meetings, assisting in the process of teching and mounting the show, working as a member of the backstage crew, and more.

On average, interns can expect to spend between two and five hours a month on intern duties from March through August, increasing to five to 10 hours a week in September and October. This is an estimate and will vary by position. For the foreseeable future, any meetings will take place virtually and will typically be held on weekdays, based on availability of the interns. Most meetings and rehearsals during September and October will be held on evenings or weekends. Show dates and times are as follows: 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. each Friday (October 15 and 22), 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. each Saturday (October 16 and 23) and 1:30 p.m. each Sunday (October 17 and 24).

Internships are available in the following production fields: Producer, Director, Choreographer, Musical Director, Stage/Production Manager, Scenic Designer, Lighting Designer, Costume Designer, Hair/Wig Designer, Makeup Designer and Prop Design/Carpentry. Find more details on each position and possible duties here.

Young adults (ages 13 – 20) with and without disabilities are invited to apply for this inclusive program using this application. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and applicants who are new to the program will be asked to participate in a virtual interview before being assigned an internship role.

Please send all questions and applications to Company Manager Joy Addler via email. We hope to have you join the Variety Theatre family this year!
