For many years, Variety selected an annual Champion for Kids to be honored for their dedication to local charities, including Variety St. Louis. The champions were well-known national and local celebrities who used their fame and kind hearts for good, including showing their support at Variety’s various events, visiting Variety Kids in the hospital and much more.

Former St. Louis Cardinals player and Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Brock was our Champion for Kids in 1999. He exemplified all that it meant to be a hero to so many, including Variety Kids, and we were saddened to learn of his recent passing.

After retiring from baseball, Lou dedicated his life to helping others through his college scholarship foundation. He also made special appearances and assisted with fundraising for many charities, encouraging others to give generously to help those in need.

In a Variety St. Louis newsletter from 1999, Lou’s wife, Jackie Brock, said, “I’m seeing his most meaningful years. He understands that his baseball career was preparation to help people and share. He understands the value of his life more than ever before.”

Thank you, Lou, for being not only one of the best baseball players of your era, but for also being one of the kindest souls of your time. You truly were a Champion for Kids and will be very missed.
