We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Variety friend and St. Louis businessman Greg Marecek. Greg was a staple in the St. Louis sports community for many years. He started as a sportswriter before moving into other media formats, including leading the charge for Missouri Sports Radio as owner of KFNS.

Greg also founded the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and remained at the helm as president. In that role, he formed a partnership with Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis through our annual Baseball Day at Camp, which started in 2017.

On this day, we host an all-star game of sorts during which all of our campers play on an accessible field complete with fans, walk-up songs and a real umpire. Missouri Sports Hall of Fame Announcer Ron Jacober has even made an appearance to announce all of our campers as they walked to the plate! Greg was always there to cheer on our Variety Kids during their games and he often brought along former St. Louis Cardinals players, including former Cardinal and current Fox Sports Midwest announcer Brad Thompson, to take the field with them.

In 2018, the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame also honored Variety with the Community Service Award. Variety was selected by Greg and his team because of our efforts to bring sports to local kids and teens with disabilities.

Thank you, Greg, for your generous support and your kindness towards Variety Kids! You will certainly be missed.
