Each week leading up to Variety Theatre 2019, we’ll be marking “Tech Tuesday” with a special spotlight on this year’s Variety Theatre Interns. These interns will partner with a theatre professional to work behind the scenes, bringing the magic of Mary Poppins to the stage.
Variety Theatre’s wardrobe interns work assist the wardrobe team with the show’s costumes. These interns help ensure that each character’s costume is ready to go before the production begins, and they also assist the team backstage throughout each show.
This year’s wardrobe intern is Variety Teen Emily. Emily has been a part of Variety Theatre since she first joined the Children’s Ensemble in our 2012 production, Annie.
Last year, Emily joined the production team as a Wardrobe Intern. She leapt into the role, ensuring that each character had everything they needed before stepping onto the stage. She has returned to the same internship this year because she did so well and loved her role so much.
“I am excited to work as a wardrobe intern because I love fashion,” says Emily. “I love seeing all of the costumes, and I’m excited to be a part of the production.”
As an intern, Emily has already traveled to Kansas City with the team to select our costumes. During rehearsals, she will help with costume fittings. And, during the show, she will help with the “quick changes” in between scenes.
Emily has become such an integral part of the wardrobe team that they have even created a special apron for her, modeled after what the pros wear during a show.
Beyond the fun, Emily is also learning what it is like to work in the theatre world, something she is interested in as a career.
“Being a Variety intern is like a job,” says Emily. “It will help me to become more independent and responsible.”
Come and see the beautiful costumes Emily has helped with yourself October 18 – 27, 2019 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. Tickets for this year’s Variety Theatre production, Mary Poppins, are on sale now at Touhill.org.
