Our friends at MindsEye have provided their Audio Description Program to Variety Theatre every year since 2013. In 2019, this service will be available for three shows across the two weekends of this year’s production, Mary Poppins.
The Audio Description program aims to bring the magic of the stage to life for those with vision impairments. While these individuals can listen to the dialogue and enjoy the songs, they often miss out on visual jokes and emotions, as well as things like beautiful sets and costumes. With audio description, MindsEye brings these visuals to life by turning them into audio.
Through the program, audience members with vision impairments receive a headset from MindsEye once they arrive at the theatre. Without talking over dialogue, a MindsEye audio describer present at the show explains the visual action on stage. This may include everything from costumes to props to on-stage action, but the describer makes sure to leave interpretation up to the listener.
MindsEye aims to empower those who are sight impaired, giving them the opportunity to become fully immersed in a wide range of events such as musical theatre. We are proud to partner with such a great organization to offer this amazing service to our Variety Theatre guests.
For the 2019 production of Mary Poppins, MindsEye will be present at the 10 a.m. show on Friday, October 18, the 10 a.m. show on Friday, October 25 and the 7 p.m. show on Saturday, October 26. Audio description services are provided free of charge with purchase of a ticket. Tickets can be purchased here.
