When it first became apparent that Variety Theatre’s 2020 production of The Music Man would have to be postponed until October 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we knew we still wanted to find a way to bring the magic of Variety Theatre to our audience this year. Our goal was to shine a little light during these dark times and, thus, Light the Lights was born.
Light the Lights was a free virtual musical that aired at 7 p.m. CT November 16 – 19, 2020. It streamed on YouTube and on our VarietyTheatre.org website, meaning that, for the first time ever, a Variety Theatre production was available to watch from anywhere in the world.
The show, as always, featured talented kids and teens both with and without disabilities from around the St. Louis area. It also showcased the talents of 13 of the finest professional actors, singers and dancers from around the region. Many more industry professionals also made several cameos. Through the use of green screens and other technology, they all performed together to bring audiences some much-needed joy through song, dance, inspirational interviews and more.
In all, Light the Lights told the story of Variety Theatre and highlighted all that is possible for kids and teens of all abilities. But we couldn’t have done it without our key supporters, including Presenting Sponsor U.S. Bank, and all those who tuned in throughout the week! Thank you for helping us give Variety Kids, their peers and these fabulous professionals the chance to shine on your phone, computer and TV screens.
If you would like to give to support Variety Theatre’s Performing Arts Fund, which makes inclusive shows like this one possible for area kids and teens with disabilities, please do so now at VarietySTL.org/SupportLTL.
