You could be a part of the Variety Theatre family this October when we take the stage with The Music Man! This inspirational production will feature an inclusive ensemble of children and teens of all abilities performing alongside a talented cast of adults, and we want you to be a part of it.
For children and teens (ages 8 – 17), this is a great opportunity to learn or hone their skills and build confidence as part of a professional theatre production. Adults are given the chance to truly make a difference while also building their resume. It is a wonderful experience for all! Click here to fill out the required online audition form and find more details below. We will not be accepting walk-ins this year – those who do not register in advance will not be permitted to audition.
Adult auditions will be held on Monday, March 23, 2020 at The Conservatory Spaces at 17 S. Old Orchard Ave. in Webster Groves, MO. An optional Open Dance Call (intermediate and advanced dancers only, please) will be held from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m., with five-minute private audition slots available from 7:15 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Please prepare 16 – 32 bars of a song of your selection.
Adult callbacks will then be held at the same location on Sunday, March 29 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and final adult callbacks will be at Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, MO on Saturday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those adults who were in the 2019 Variety Theatre production of Mary Poppins may go straight to callbacks, but must still fill out our online registration form.
Auditions for the inclusive Children’s Ensemble, open to kids and teens of all abilities and experience levels, will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, MO. Kids (ages 8 – 12) will audition from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and are asked to prepare a selected portion of the song “The Wells Fargo Wagon" - click here to download. Teens (ages 13 – 17) will audition from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a selected portion of the song “Iowa Stubborn" - click here to download. Callbacks for both kids and teens selected to continue on in the audition process will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 in the same location. All kids and teens are required to audition, regardless of their participation in last year’s production.
We strive to make this audition experience as accessible and welcoming as possible for all involved, especially our kids and teens. The kids and teens will be asked to sing their prepared song in groups. If they are comfortable doing so, they may be asked to sing individually as well. They will then take part in a group dance/movement audition, when they will learn a short piece of a dance number from the production itself. This session will be led by Director Lara Teeter and his assistants - make sure to wear clothes you can move in!
To help parents prepare their children for auditions, we will now hold an optional Parent Meeting on Friday, March 27 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Parkway Central High School. During this meeting, Director Lara Teeter and Executive Producer Jan Albus will speak with the parents, explaining the audition and casting process. They will also provide tips on how to prepare children for this process, and share more details on how we make casting decisions as well as what we look for and expect during auditions. There will be a Q&A session towards the end of the meeting. Again, this meeting is not mandatory, but it is highly encouraged, especially for those new to Variety Theatre.
If you’d like to get an idea of the time commitment for this year’s production, the tentative production schedule can be found here. Please note that this is subject to change. Rehearsals for the Children’s Ensemble and non-Equity cast will begin with a full weekend of rehearsals September 25 through 27. Equity cast members will join the group starting September 29 for full company rehearsals, which will be held nightly Tuesday through Sunday of each week. The production will take the stage at the Touhill Performing Arts Center in St. Louis, MO for 10 performances across two weekends – October 16 – 18 and 23 – 25, 2020.
