The second annual Variety Family Conference - supported by the Emerson Resource Center - will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019 and all are invited to attend! This year’s conference, which will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Edward Jones (130 Edward Jones Blvd, Maryland Heights, MO, 63043), will focus on family support and community inclusion, and is open to Variety families and community members.
The featured speaker will be Dr. Ann Turnbull. Ann has been a professor, researcher, and advocate for individuals with disabilities and their families for five decades. She is a retired Distinguished Professor of Special Education at the University of Kansas, and she has authored 37 books and over 300 articles and chapters.
The U.S. National Historic Preservation Trust on Developmental Disabilities selected Ann and her husband, Rud, as two of 36 individuals who “changed the course of history for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the 20th Century.” In 1990, Ann was the recipient of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy International Leadership Award. She has also received Lifetime Achievement Awards from five national disability organizations in the U.S.
Ann is quick to say that her “best professor” from whom she has learned the most was her son, Jay Turnbull (1967-2009), who experienced multiple significant disabilities and had as an adult what she likes to describe as an “enviable life” in terms of employment, home of his own, friends, and broad community inclusion.
The event will also include a social hour with a complimentary breakfast prior to the conference, starting at 8 a.m. Childcare will also be available to Variety families at $25 per family, a fee that will be refunded upon attendance.
Registration is now open – advance registration and a registration fee of $25 per attendee must be received by Sunday, December 1 to reserve your spot. We aim to make this event as accessible as possible, so Variety family members and students (with a valid ID) will have their $25 registration check returned to them upon attendance at the event.
Register today here. We hope to see you December 7!
