Variety Teen Nathan uses a power wheelchair to access his world independently, which means he also relies on his family’s accessible van to get out and about. The only problem? The conversion kit that makes it possible for Nathan to enter and exit the van has been broken for a long time. And, on top of that, he has grown so tall that he doesn’t fit in this van without being reclined!
Recently, the family was able to get a new accessible van with help from Variety St. Louis. This new van not only has an updated conversion kit that is wider and easier to use, the van itself has much more leg and head room for Nathan, making journeys significantly more comfortable.
“Nathan has his freedom back,” says Keli, Nathan’s mom. “He can go in public without having to be pushed around. He is all power, and he loves the new conversion!”
There’s even enough room for the entire family to ride in one vehicle (shown in the photo below), something that hasn’t been possible in a while. This gives Nathan and his family the chance to finally do more together.
Keli shares that none of this would have been possible without help from Variety and our generous supporters. New vans, especially those modified to be completely accessible, can be very expensive.
“Thank you so much, Variety,” says Keli. “Without you and the money we received, we wouldn’t have been able to get a vehicle that fits Nathan’s needs.”
