When you ask Variety Teen Brian what his dream job is, he is quick to tell you that he wants to be a firefighter.
“I want to help people,” he says. “Firefighters are heroes.”
On May 29, Brian got the chance to test out his dream job as a “Firefighter for the Day” with the St. Louis Fire Department.
Brian’s day started at the St. Louis Fire Department headquarters, where he met many firefighters and first responders, including Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson himself! He also toured the department – he saw the dispatcher office and took a trip through time while looking at historic artifacts like helmets and uniforms. His favorite piece of history at headquarters? A statue of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.
After his tour, Brian headed out back to check out the department’s brand new hook and ladder fire truck. He also met a team of firefighters from St. Louis Fire Department Engine House No. 5. The firefighters showed Brian all of the cool technology and tools to be found on the truck, letting him sit in the driver’s seat and even go up in the bucket! Brian also had the chance to try on a real uniform and test out his firefighting skills with the water hose.
Then, Brian rode in the fire truck to Engine House No. 5, where he toured the firehouse and was treated to a picnic lunch made by the firefighters. Just when the day was coming to a close, a voice came on the loud speaker to welcome “Brian – Firefighter for a Day” to the team, an announcement heard in all of the firehouses in St. Louis.
At the end of the day, we asked Brian if he still wanted to be a firefighter. With a big grin, he shouted, “Yes! This was awesome!”
Thank you to the St. Louis Fire Department for welcoming Brian to your team for the day. And thank you to Monica Adams with Fox 2 News and KPLR 11 for capturing it all – you can watch Brian’s segment here.
