Emmy’s Camp Confidence

There are many great things about summer camp. From lifelong friends to new experiences, camp offers so much to those who attend.

Variety’s Adventure Camp is no exception. This free program is open to children and teens with disabilities in the St. Louis region and is often a favorite part of summer for Variety Kids like Emmy.

This summer is Emmy’s third at Adventure Camp. Although this summer and last were spent online due to the pandemic, Emmy has had a blast.

“It never ceases to amaze us how great camp is for her,” says Emmy’s mom, Morgan. “Emmy looks forward to Camp every year.”

Morgan shares that Virtual Adventure Camp gave Emmy the confidence she needed to be able to participate independently, even though she struggled with doing so during virtual school. The boxes of materials that were sent to her house prior to the first day of Camp were organized by day and activity, and were labeled so that Emmy could figure out what was needed all on her own.

“It was so easy for her to know which supplies she needed and when – my husband and I rarely had to help,” says Morgan.

Emmy’s great camp experience was beneficial to her parents as well. They loved seeing her grow through the program, and the big smile on her face was one they hadn’t seen in a while.

“We heard laughs and giggles all week and those are things that, after this very hard year, we haven’t heard as much of,” Morgan says. “Variety gives her a chance to flourish in ways that we, as parents, can’t replicate and seeing that is priceless.”

Morgan, Emmy and Emmy’s dad, Jarrett, are so grateful that they were able to have a fantastic Virtual Camp experience, all thanks to our wonderful supporters.

“From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU for everything you do for all Variety Kids!!!” Morgan exclaims.
