Christian’s Family has the Spirit of St. Louis

Christian’s mom and dad are true heroes that exemplify the spirit of the St. Louis community. They regularly put their lives on the line for others through their work as St. Louis City police officers, and his mom, Amy, is an active member of the U.S. military. At home, they dedicate their lives to helping five-year-old Christian, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was 10 months old.

Since that first diagnosis, Christian has also received diagnoses of asthma and epilepsy. He cannot walk or stand on his own, but his mom, dad and even his twin brother, Christopher, are always there.

Amy says that Christopher helps take care of his brother whenever he can. He is very protective, holds Christian’s hand at the doctor’s office, and they love to ride bikes together – with Christian on an adaptive bike from Variety.

This bike, however, is not the first thing Christian has received with the help of Variety and our supporters. Since he was a year old, Christian has received numerous pieces of equipment, including a corner seat, a kid cart, a bath chair and more, as well as equine-assisted therapy, all of which have improved his life. Variety has also provided a chance for Amy to meet other families with children with special needs, a network that is both comforting and helpful.

“Variety has always been there when we weren’t sure what to do,” says Amy.

These pieces of equipment, therapy and programs also allow Christian to spend more time with his family, which is important to Amy.

“We know we may have limited time with him, so we want to spend as much time as possible together,” says Amy. “Having a child with special needs provides an entirely different outlook on life.”
